Silvio Scherli has likely fabricated the February 1948 story in The Locomotive, or De locomotief: Samarangsch handels- en advertentie-blad, loosely based on true (and far less mysterious) events in November 1940.

Inclusion in Category:Maritime incidents in 1947

This article is currently in Category:Maritime incidents in 1947, but given the severe doubt as to whether the ship existed, and the fact that a 1940 date for the incident has also been suggested (and indeed the story seems to have originated in 1940, making the 1947 date very unlikely), I think it probably should be removed from this category. It is definitely wrong. The original report by Scherli gives a date of November 13 (or 19, in some of the 1940 sources, which may be a misprint), 1939. 2001:4DD3:7AD7:0:8CA8:458E:72C3:7CFB (talk) 22:21, 3 November 2025 (UTC)

Popular culture

This legend is the basis for the game The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan yet there is no mention of it here at all. I know wikipedia isn't for trivia but I'd never heard of the legend until the game so it must hold some significance. IRMacGuyver (talk) 06:48, 25 June 2025 (UTC)

I would second this. A pop culture section is maybe overkill, but perhaps just a sentence towards the top about how the game was based on the myth and drew more attention to it? ~2025-39926-94 (talk) 20:14, 10 December 2025 (UTC)
