"It is not clear when the monastery was established. Its name is derived from the Russian word for 'living together,' possibly because nuns were allowed into the cloister prior to 1504." Which supposed Russian word would this be? Russian Wikipedia claims that "По преданию, основан в конце XIV века раскаявшимся разбойником по имени Опта (Оптия), в иночестве — Макарий." "According to legend, it was founded at the end of the 14th Century by a reformed bandit by the name of Opta (Optiya), or the monastic name of Makarii (Macarius).
