Introduction

I tagged the article for a rewrite of the intro, and added the line "Optical mesh networks are a type of telecommunications network." as a starting point for the new intro. A good article introduction starts by saying what the subject of the article is, and describing it in general terms, for as general an audience as possible. Assume a casual reader who will read the first two paragraphs of the article and then stop, having learned all he or she needed to know about the subject.
