uptake from surroundings also in mammals?

Oocytes/eggs in some species like insects take up a lot of material supplied by surrounding cells. Is that the case in mammals also? That is, does an oocyte take up material from maternal cells and from the blood stream that may even have a different genetic makeup? -- Jakob

Section on Oocytogenesis

I find the terminology in this section confusing and I am lead to believe incorrect.



"Oogenesis starts with the process of developing oogonia, which occurs via the transformation of primordial follicles (Should this be Primordial Germ Line cells) into primary oocytes, a process called oocytogenesis.[2] Oocytogenesis is complete either before or shortly after birth."

The Primary follicle I believe is the mass of cells including a Primary oocyte. Therefore, from my understanding, the primary follicle can not be a 'precursor' to the primary oocyte.

I am considering developing this page further as part of an educational assignment in Fall of 2013. If someone else is also working on this, please send me a message and let me know soon, so we don’t duplicate initial efforts in page development. Female version of spermiogenesis?

See the table in this article and compare with spermatogenesis. Is there any corresponding processes to spermiogenesis? It's not oogenesis, because that's the whole process, corresponding to spermatogenesis. Mikael Häggström 10:19, 17 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

most of this page seems to be about human oogenesis, perhaps a separate page for that topic?

The oogenesis in mammals section has numerous statements that are human specific such as chromosome numbers, timing during development, etc. Is there someone more knowledgeable that can differentiate the facts that are common to all mammals and the specific facts about humans? The Centrosome Role in Oogenesis

I haven't been able to verify the statement

"in animal life cycles oogenesis is done completely without the aid of spindle-coordinating centrosomes" (by Sugemax)

OK, it's correct. I could find several reliable sources backing up this particular trait. It's likely to be related to the paternal contribution of the centrosomes in most animal species. In those such as in rodents in which it's been shifted, the centrosome disassembly may be the remaining vestigial trait of a previous necessary requirement. Inconsistency

The verbal description under the table at Oogenesis#Oogenesis_in_mammals appears to be correct; there are normally only two polar bodies because the first is discarded without dividing. Reference fix needed

I fixed a reference that had been entered so the heading for the References section works properly again. I believe someone was probably trying to insert this Cho WK, Stern S, Biggers JD. 1974. Inhibitory effect of dibutyryl cAMP on mouse oocyte maturation in vitro. J Exp Zool.187:383-386 as an additional reference where the current 5th one is, regarding cAMP. But I'm not sure so someone familiar with the content should confirm and if so move it to be an appropriate inline reference or remove it.

Rewrite needed about ovulation in “Ovarian Cycle” section?

I added to the text a "clarification needed" tag. It draws attention to the following problem:

The article stated [here on the talk page only i have added UPPERCASE to indicate terms that I dispute]:

[…]the follicle bursts and the cells attached to it emerge from the stigma. The OVARY is collected FROM the uterine tube, where fertilization can take place in the ampullate zone, the widest part of the oviduct where fertilization typically occurs.

Shouldn't this say: […]the follicle bursts and the cells attached to it emerge from the stigma. The OVUM is collected by the fimbriae INTO the fallopian (=uterine) tube, where [etc]?? David Couch (talk) 02:52, 9 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Table needs a LOT of work.

The table needs work. It would probably be easiest just to start over. One glaring blunder is that it claims something about the 3rd trimester. Gosh, mice gestate in 20 days, so whats up with adding another almost 3 months to that? If it's going to talk about human gestation, SAY SO. It is claimed that the oogonium "forms the follicle" (you can see it if you hover the mouse pointer over the term). No, it is the Primary Oocyte that "forms" (I have some doubts that this is the best way to say that the follicle develops around the primary oocyte!) the follicle. The oogonia are the last phase of the (female) Primordial Germ Cells, after migration to the genital ridge (in mammals). They, arguably, continue to collect around the cortical cords while proliferating into the millions and becoming Primary Oocytes. Then there's the nearly useless inclusion of the ootid cell type. Should be removed. There's also the claim that dictyate may last 50 years. Well, given that most animals don't live 50 years, then that's simply ridiculous. Clearly, it is intended (and unfortunately, the same table appears in other WP articles :( for humans only. ~2026-29044-21 (talk) 17:30, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
