The Pompeani 2021 paper conclusion states: "The C14 ages presented herein and by Reardon (2014) push back the oldest known copper artifact age to at least 7690 ± 40 BP (ca. 8500 cal BP)." The Malakoff article , which purports to summarize the Pompeani paper findings, states 'This month in 'Radiocarbon', the team reports that the most reliable dates, combined with the sediment data, indicate the Old Copper Culture emerged at least 9500 years ago". Our wiki article currently uses both these sources, but inconsistently uses the 8500 date in the lede, and the 9500 date in the infobox, and in section 'Western Great Lakes'. As the date used by Malakoff misrepresents the conclusion in the Pompeani paper, I will remove the Malakoff article as a source, and change the article to use the 8500 BP date consistently. - Crosbie21:39, 3 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
