Hello! I'll be your GA reviewer. Give me a moment, as I'll be opening Arigho's review at the same time as this one. I'll be working on both of them in tandem; if you want me to prioritize one over the other, please let me know! Since I've reviewed two of your articles already, I won't need to explain my procedures. I'm very excited to review this! 🌷Reverosie🌷★talk★ 12:29, 13 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Initial review:

  1. Is it well written?
    A. The prose is clear and concise, and the spelling and grammar are correct:
    B. It complies with the manual of style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation:
  2. Is it verifiable with no original research, as shown by a source spot-check?
    A. It contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline:
    B. Reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose):
    C. It contains no original research:
    D. It contains no copyright violations nor plagiarism:
  3. Is it broad in its coverage?
    A. It addresses the main aspects of the topic:
    B. It stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style):
  4. Is it neutral?
It represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each: (I need to do a more in-depth reading of the article before scoring this)
  5. Is it stable?
It does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute:
  6. Is it illustrated, if possible, by images?
    A. Images are tagged with their copyright status, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content:
    B. Images are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions:
  7. Overall:
    Pass or Fail:

Spot check

[edit]

Thanks to my other reviews of your articles with the same sources, I know that the spot check will be easy. Since I know that source 3 is accurate, I'll mark that as a quick pass

Since I already know that these sources are reliable, I went to verify that the folk song cited in source 11 was really on page 94, and it was. The spot check is a pass.

Infobox

[edit]
  • It does not need to be specified that Obioye was born with that name, since his birth name does not differ from his name throughout the article (though, from what I've read, it seems even more likely to me that his birth name was not Obioye at all, but his regnal name, making this even more of an enigma)
  • Since we have Obioye's approximate year of birth and certain year of death, his approximate age at death should be listed as 41-42.
  • If Obioye's death in 1121 was certain, why is the end of his reign in 1121 only an approximate? This should be fixed

Lead

[edit]

No suggestions for the lead, though I must ask why there's a citation in the lead, breaking a well-established pattern in your articles

General formatting

[edit]

The article's background section extends well into Obioye's reign, and many details are in a strange order. The background section is also very, very long, especially compared to the reign section. This urgently needs to be fixed, and I have an idea of how we could fix the formatting without rewriting the article.

The re-formatted version of the article is currently in my sandbox. Please look at what I've done. You can make any changes you'd like. []

I'll be using the reformatted version of the article in my sandbox for the rest of the review's format. The version of the article in my sandbox does not need to be final.

Early life and background

[edit]
  • P1S4: Obioye's early years were spent in an agricultural setting, assisting his family with farming duties. A bit of clarification here would be nice. Obioye is from a very noble family, so why is he helping with the farming? Was this normal in Igodomigodo?
    • This was perfectly normal.
  • Suggestion: P2S1: As a youth, Obioye did not receive training in diplomacy, military tactics, or economic planning—skills considered important for a future Ogiso This is a bit redundant with the last sentence of the first article. I'd suggest merging these two sentences.
  • P2S5: This shift was associated with a gradual decrease in food production, and by the time of Oduwa's death, inflation and food shortages were present in the kingdom The famine should certainly be mentioned here, as it started in the last year of Oduwa's reign.

Reign and difficulties

[edit]

I have no suggestions for this part of the article. It is already GA status. Excellent work!

Famine and inflation

[edit]
  • P3S6: By the close of 1120, I'd suggest rephrasing this to "by the end of 1120" for clarity

Death and aftermath

[edit]
  • P1S9: After his passing, I'd suggest rephrasing this to "after his death" for clarity
  • P2: I'd suggest mentioning that Obioye died when he was around 41 or 42 somewhere, since his "premature death" is mentioned many times, but not his specific age at death.
  • P2S4: Others propose a spiritual explanation, stating that his continuous curses upon the land and its people were believed to have angered the gods, leading to his premature demise. this could simply say "stating that his continuous curses upon the land and its people angered the gods".
  • P2S7: The famine had severely impacted agriculture, and inflation, along with monetary policies, had not restored economic stability This sentence is phrased strangely. I'd suggest something along the lines of "The famine had severely impacted agriculture, and Obioye's monetary policies had not restored economic stability or helped with the inflation"
  • Suggestion: P3S6 + P3S7: Obioye is recognised as a historical figure in early Benin history. His reign is studied in economic history and political science, particularly in discussions about the effects of currency nationalisation and government intervention in controlling inflation. I'd suggest completely removing the first sentence of these two and making the second one specify "Obioye's reign", since this is not only a known fact, but feels out of place compared to the rest of the paragraph regarding Obioye and Arigho

Overall

[edit]

I expect nothing less than a quick pass. The procedure is the same. If you are able to resolve all of my suggestions within 3 - 4 days, the article will be quick passed. If not (which I doubt will happen), I will put the article on hold and give you as long as you need, but ideally not over three weeks. If you cease to work on the GA review for an extended period of time and don't give me a reason as to why, I may have to fail you.

This article was a pleasure to review, and good luck!

I forgot to ping you, sorry! @Vanderwaalforces: 🌷Reverosie🌷★talk★ 02:58, 15 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Reverosie Ah, thank you for that excellent "rearrangement", it was indeed helpful. I incorporated that version now since I like it. I have also sorted out every other comment above. Thank you for yet another excellent review. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 15:05, 15 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Excellent work! I'll be passing the article now! 🌷Reverosie🌷★talk★ 16:28, 15 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
