I haven't seen the other books' pages or the page for the series but I think all the names similar to "Earth-Names" should be accounted for.

Shan=Khan
Ulan= Uhlan, a originaly Polish light calvary. My source says: "Prussian cavalry from Poland were called uhlans and before long light cavalry in general were referred to as uhlans"
