why is it

why is it, that those nuclear-holocaust-programs all have such strange acronyms ?? NUTS (=crazy) MAD (=crazy) ??? gallows humour anyone ?-- ExpImp^talkcon 23:35, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Probably true. I guess the idea for this strategy was born in some politicans head, and when he told the gernerals to work it out they just told each other that this was totally nuts cause it couldnt work. And now they just had to find words for the letters ... and come on ":Nuclear utilization target selection" doesnt make much sense- but NUTS describes it pretty well —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.178.182.94 (talk) 20:51, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

My 2 cents: it could also be a reference to Colonel Joseph H. Harper; when asked to surrender to the Wehrmacht during the battle of Bastogne his response letter to the Germans said simply "Nuts!". Could make sense. 70.81.89.66 (talk) 05:45, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

NUTS is not strategy

NUTS is an acronym invented for PR purposes to critique the critics of MAD, who believed in counterforce targeting strategies. It was intended to paint those strategies as at least as crazy as MAD. It seems like overkill (pun intended) to have a separate article on an invented term. NPguy (talk) 20:56, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
