Notability?

[edit]

The only sources which deal with the subject as a primary topic (other than the 2019 quasi-puff piece in the regional Corkman title) appear to be those very recent sources (from Feb/Mar 2026) which discuss the creamery's proposed closure. Per WP:NORG, only a small percentage of the world's orgs meet the requirements for a Wikipedia article. Does this 100-person farmer-owned co-op creamery? Yes, the issues with their environmental/discharge licences were the subject of some (mostly) regional coverage. But it is mostly presented as WP:NOTNEWS coverage of relatively recent events. Does it add up to WP:ORGDEPTH? Where, for example, is the coverage needed to expand the near 100 year (radio silence) "gap" between the org's foundation in 1928 and issues/threatened closure in 2026? Am I overlooking something? Guliolopez (talk) 21:00, 25 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Agree, especially as it is on the verge of being merged into one of the larger processors and will be no more. Ceoil (talk) 17:30, 27 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I disagree about its notability. In spite of some of it's coverage being regional, most of the citations are independent reliable sources that lend the creamery, especially its environmental disputes (which have, incidentally, received a good deal of natural coverage), a good deal of coverage. None of the primary support anything contentious. I have and I will be sure to use them to establish non-self serving facts (like that it was founded in 1928, or that it it is an owner of Ornua).
I'm still looking for sources discussing its history, and I do think the article could use more construction, but I think that as of now all I can really do is find more information from more sources. I don't want the article to focus too incessantly on it's proposed closure, but it is important and relevant information to its present and future. If absolutely needed, I wouldn't be opposed to a merge of this article with one like Ornua, but I believe the facts within this article are important and easily help it pass WP:SIGNIF, WP:SIRS and, WP:ORGDEPTH. Hi Slamforeman, but if anything your edits have increased the argument for deletion, as it is overweighted towards documenting EPA reports, so it seems almost like an attack article. Whatever, the co-op's milk pool seems on the verge of being consumed by one of the larger co-ops, likely Carberry or Kerry, and the fact that you couldn't find anything notable about its earlier history indicates that there is nothing notable about its earlier history...it has a tiny milk pool. Note I sort of have a COI here, being a part (son) of the farming community in Cork, but in a far and distant part of the county. Ceoil (talk) 22:13, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Calling this article an attack article is a very serious claim, and one I think is unfounded. Everything about the EPA reports is backed up by reliable sources that support its notability. If you think anything included is libellous, I encourage you to either remove it or we can discuss it here.
If its early history isn't notable, then that suggests that its early history shouldn't be included in the article, not that the subject itself isn't notable.
I think this conversation is getting a bit heated and I want to make it clear I'm not enormously attached to this article. I had just thought it would be an interesting subject to write about. If you really think that this article has too many issues I'm ok with you or someone else starting an AFD for it. I respect your contributions and I hope to have productive conversations like this in the future. :) Slamforeman (talk) 23:29, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sorry Slamforeman if my post came across as aggressive, it really wasn't meant to and I don't doubt for once minute your good faith intentions. But if we are to have an article on a soon-not-to-exist 100-year-old co-op that is 98% slanted on the last 5 or 6 months, then we would question the balance. From the paywalled industry papers, such as the Irish Farmers Journal and from talking to people as all this arose, I gather that they got into trouble because they, like all European milk processors, in expectation of a boom of milk supply heavily invested in basic milk processing stainless steel, but fiatally North Cork waited too long build an supporting Effluent treatment plant. But the extra milk never came, and their asset utility and cash flow fell to shit. This was a real problem for the local environment, with massive fish kills, as you have outlined, and a large negative for Irish Farming. My preference is to merge a shortened version of it into a larger Irish Dairy Industry article, where...to be fair, it would be more widely read. And to note again, in case you think otherwise, I think the whole episode is a disgrace. Ceoil (talk) 00:29, 4 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
No your post didn't come off as aggressive at all! I just wanted to make clear that my intentions weren't to flame a random creamery for no reason. I've also gotten into very weird conversations where I've just started quoting Wikipedia minutia at people and I wanted to prevent myself from doing that. I have autism so I can sometimes get too invested into something and I can miss social ques easily and I reckon that's a bad combination for Wikipedia talk pages.
I think the idea of merging this article into an Irish Dairy Industry is a very good one! I think there are other shorter articles like Ornua or 1986–1988 radioactive milk distribution in Mexico (the latter of which inspired me to write this article; incidentally), that could be summarised/merged into some sort of hypothetical Irish Dairy Industry article, though I'd be uncertain how to structure said article.
Best wishes, Slamforeman (talk) 02:01, 4 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi Slamforeman and Guliolopez. I'm softening on the challenge to this article's notability, maybe primarily because I think it's a good cautionary tale. However, Slamforeman, please please please, for the love of god stop starting every sentence as a new paragraph with a variation of "On 11 April 2026, North Cork Creameries....." :) But good work overall. Ceoil (talk) 21:43, 11 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
PS think the "difficulties" section would benefit from being shortened down - at the moment it is a series of events devoid of context. Ceoil (talk) 21:45, 11 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
