I had been composing music since my early teenaged years. Self-taught. Back in the early seventies, I took some lessons in composition from Norma Tyer, as a private student at the Sydney Con.

I was startled by her enthusiasm. She said I was “very talented” which I could not believe. I thought she was merely being pleasant. She held an end of term mini-concert where some of her other students performed. I played one of my pieces, but Miss Tyer wanted more from me, and even grabbed my score book and played some scrappy bits I’d written. Her encouragement was genuine and evident, and I’m sorry now that I did not continue studying with her. It was some years before I began to write music I thought worthy of others hearing and playing. I guess I was not then ready. It was many years before I encountered again anything like Norma Tyer’s support and affirmation. The world of the arts is rife with envy and jealousy; myself and my music have met rebuffs and sneers from several Big Names in Australian music; from a few other Names, I received assistance and the warm welcome of one artist to another.
