I've just put the uncropped image back, with two rationales for this. The first is that after the crop the resulting image is 124 × 185 pixels. Inboxes need an extra parameter declared for images that are smaller than 200px wide. But even with that, this size would generally be too small to be used. The second rationale is that while a head and shoulders portrait may be often used, here the original image is fitting. From MOS:LEADIMAGE, "[Lead images] should not only illustrate the topic specifically, but also be the type of image used for similar purposes in high-quality reference works" – Kalina is known for creating environmental portraits (see /portraits on his site), so here the same, made by his friend, is a nod to that practice of this artist and a detail that might also be found in a reference work.
