Katt's birthdate and birth place were furnished directly by his family to news outlets after his death. The South Dakota birth place appears to have originated due to his mother being from there. It goes to show how otherwise reliable sources like the New York Times—which are increasingly staffed by bloggers rather than fact-finding journalists—sometimes guess, reprint what they read on Wikipedia, or just have outdated information.
