Yes, he was second male lead in All Coppers Are... in 1973, though he was somewhat upstaged by his Seventies hairstyle. https://www2.bfi.org.uk/films-tv-people/4ce2b6c3809a5 He was also the lead in the 1975 BBC three-part drama Prometheus: The Life of Balzac, based on Andre Maurois' book. https://www2.bfi.org.uk/films-tv-people/4ce2b75ccdbcd Which may be his only lead TV role, even though he was such a familiar face and voice. He had a good career and was in loads of things (like the first West End run of Michael Frayn's huge hit Noises Off, as second male lead to Paul Eddington), but he was probably right to predict that he'd be remembered for that one guest role in Fawlty Towers -- well, that and Witchfinder General, which has a cult following.
