Source: "Various stories are told about this incident raising questions about how and why Nicholas died , but in fact the weather was bad , the waves were high , and he may indeed have drowned because of rough seas." (Folda 2005, p. 487)

I suggest a slightly more concise ALT2: "... that Patriarch Nicholas's valuables were found on a Venetian ship after he allegedly slipped to his death during boarding, leading some to suspect foul play?". I think that's more interesting than ALT0, because frankly, it seems normal to die during a sack, even by drowning; it's the details about boarding & treasure that make it suspicious and interesting.
