Naturally occurring DNA damages
[edit]The article states "Naturally occurring DNA damages (mostly due to cellular metabolism and the properties of DNA in water at body temperatures) occur at a rate of more than 10,000 new damages, on average, per human cell, per day." per https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC47258/ giving the impression that the damage persists and is a major contributing factor.
The "damages" assessed were actually those found within the waste (urine) being the result of the body efficiently removing the damaged DNA. The only DNA damages that would contribute to the health of the organism would be those that we're NOT removed.
It may be good to reword the article to include a reference to the sentence immediately after it in the source where it mentions DNA repair enzymes efficiently remove most, but not all the damage. It would be interesting to know what proportion of damaged DNA is not detected or repaired, and whether this is meant in the context of a single day, but that assessment may require sequencing of all cells of the organism and knowledge of whether changes are actually damaging or beneficial to the long term health of the organism.
In summary it appears that disfunction of the DNA repair mechanisms is a more likely contributing factor than accumulation of naturally occuring DNA damage.
