C-cube chip

The body current describes the CL550 running MPEG, but unless I'm mistaken this chip only supported "normal" JPEG. The cited article does describe it running video, but I do not believe that is MPEG. MPEG-1 was published in 1991, which seems too close to this date to have been used? Does anyone know for sure what is going on here?
