Query
[edit]If Prime died in 1840, how could he have accepted the surrender of a Confederate Naval Lt.? Either the dates given are wrong or another Nathaniel Prime accepted the surrender. In fact, the older Prime may not be the owner of the Hell Gate mansion at all.
An article from the New York Times of 1872 http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F30D1FF9345C1A7493C1A9178BD95F468784F9 states that the building known by many at that time as the Prime mansion was built in 1760 at No.1 Broadway by Primrose Kennedy and eventually occupied by Nathaniel Prime in 1839. It may well be that Nathaniel Prime the banker gave his name to a different building and that Nathaniel Prime the Civil War Captain bought the Hell Gate property, though almost certainly not in 1807 - 56 years before his encounter with Lt.
