First diploma from Yale College in 1702
First diploma from Yale College in 1702
  • Source: The first bachelor of arts degree at Yale (then the Collegiate School) was awarded solely on examination to Nathaniel Chauncey (fellow 1746– 1752) in 1702. Old records show that...the recipient of the first degree was Nathaniel Chauncey. He had been educated privately and had come to the Collegiate School merely to be examined. He was found to be so well educated that, in 1702, he received both the Bachelor of Arts and the Master of Arts degrees.
    • ALT1: ... that Nathaniel Chauncey, the first Yale graduate, was a Puritan who opposed revivalist preachers like George Whitefield? Source: Same as above, and: He was a leader of the old light, or conservative school, of the [Puritan/Congregationalist] theology of his time; and was a thorough opponent of Whitfield, and of all those clergymen of Connecticut, who accorded with [Whitfield's] views, or admitted him into their churches.

  • for ALT0 only. New enough, long enough, well-sourced, no signs of copyvio per earwig or myself. Hooks are both well-sourced, though ALT1 is not interesting enough to meet DYK criteria. DYK completed. All approved. Jishara (talk) 00:39, 24 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
