Notable Record Pools, please do not delete

[edit]

In a music business landscape/hip-hop community, these DJ record pools are super notable. Asking for help from any other music expert/Wiki editor to weigh on on that and confirm the fact. External links are appropriate too. A person mentioned in this article (Al Pizarro) deserves a page of his own, I will create it soon.

Notable Digital Record Pools Several digital record pools have played significant roles in the evolution of DJ music distribution in the United States and internationally. DigiWaxx was founded in 1999 by Corey Llewellyn and is widely regarded as the first fully digital record pool in the United States. The platform emerged during the industry's transition from physical media (vinyl, CD) to online delivery systems. In a 2024 interview, music executive Al Pizarro, a veteran of the record pool industry and former Billboard reporter, credited DigiWaxx with setting the standard for digital distribution, stating, "You’re the first guy out the gate. Love your Digiwaxx," and "I think that you set the template for everybody else to follow." ZIPDJ, established in 2007 in Toronto, Canada, is another prominent example of a subscription-based digital pool. The platform offers promotional content from over 4,000 international labels, including major and independent imprints. ZIPDJ also provides curated genre-specific playlists, DJ charts, and reporting tools that allow labels to collect usage data and crowd feedback in real time. RockAmerica, launched in 1980 in New York City, was an early example of a music-video pool. Subscribers received curated collections of promotional music videos on physical formats such as VHS and Betacam, which had to be returned after a limited period. RockAmerica tracked user feedback and compiled video charts used by the entertainment and marketing industries. Wikirapguru (talk) 21:21, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia is not a place to make lists of links like these (see WP:ELNO), nor is it a place to make lists of vendors or music subscription services (WP:NOT). We're not building a link directory or a business directory here. Also, kindly stop changing the title of the page without following the WP:RM process. MrOllie (talk) 21:31, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
This is not links, those pools have Wikipedia pages of their own, they are notable in so many ways, if you were in the nusic industry you would have understood. Wikirapguru (talk) 21:39, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
If you had more experience on Wikipedia you would have understood that the purpose of this site is not to make lists of businesses offering a particular service. You'll note that the article on Plumbing doesn't have lists of people who will fix your pipes. MrOllie (talk) 21:41, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Kindly have a look at WP:ONUS, and stop trying to force this in. Not on this page. Not by making a copy of this page. Not by deleting speedy deletion tags from your copy of the page. This is highly disruptive and needs to stop. MrOllie (talk) 22:34, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Stop trying comparing Plumbing to Music please. Wikirapguru (talk) 22:39, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Music is ART, Plumbing is not. Hip-Hop culture has shaped modern America in so many ways, and DJ Record Pools is a large chapter of its history. It`s possible to discuss plumbers without naming specific companies, but skipping names of the most prominent DJ record Pools that were used as a means to discover music before CDS and MP3s came into existence is like discussing Art without naming Museums where the artpieces were/are collected. Wikirapguru (talk) 22:39, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
The music business is not so special that we should set aside Wikipedia's policies. This simply isn't a place to build lists of businesses (or lists of external links to businesses). You're trying to force Wikipedia into being something that it simply is not designed to be. MrOllie (talk) 22:43, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Music business is actually very special, articles about it don`t follow Wikipedia guidelines to the T. If you have issues with my edits, then I have bad news, can send you hundreds of examples of pages about music business and you will have to start a dispute with their authors and block all those authors.
All I did was attempted to correct an article name and added examples with their own Wikipedia pages, only to get threats from you. Not fair. Wikirapguru (talk) 22:49, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
See WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. That some other page has a policy problem means that it needs to be fixed, not that you should make the problem worse by ignoring policy elsewhere. I placed a few standard warning messages on your talk page because you were editing disruptively. They are not 'threats' - I will not block you personally, but I have no doubt that someone else will if you keep editing as you have been. MrOllie (talk) 22:51, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Okay, delete that other page, just please restore my edits. PLEASE... Wikirapguru (talk) 22:54, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I continue to object for the policy-based reasons I have outlined above, so no, I will not restore your edits. MrOllie (talk) 22:55, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I am genuinely doing it for the sake of sharing knowledge, nobody is paying me to edit. Sometimes I skip on personal life and sleep, only to wake up and discover that the edits I have put my ALL to have just vanished... Maybe we don`t see eye-to-eye, but can you make 1 time exception and let my edits go through, PLEASE. Get rid of external links if that`s what annoys you the most. Please kelp. Wikirapguru (talk) 22:57, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
My reply stands. I decline to restore your edits. I do not doubt that you are attempting to be helpful, but the results of your editing are not consistent with Wikipedia's policies (that is, the actual effect makes Wikipedia less encyclopedic) so reverts are necessary. MrOllie (talk) 23:01, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
So how come it`s acceptable to create pages for record labels, music artists, producers, music albums, even particular songs that are not even popular? That is direct violation of Wikipedia policy according to you, since the content is promotional in nature, subjects are barely known.
And here I am trying to improve the page that talks about how major music projects are being/have been discovered in the first place, and get a definite NO from you? Wikirapguru (talk) 23:08, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm not interested in debating hypotheticals with you. As I just explained, I appreciate that you are trying to improve the page. But what you actually did was make the page worse. MrOllie (talk) 23:12, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ignorance is a bliss, right? Wikirapguru (talk) 23:14, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
If you really appreciated my attempts, your actions and responses would be different. Wikirapguru (talk) 23:16, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I appreciate your intentions, but not your results. Hence the necessary reverts. MrOllie (talk) 23:19, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Trumpetrep:: As a fellow music lover, can you help me to improve this article? I am trying to add the names of most prominent record pools from the 80s and 90s like The Funky People, DigiWaxx, ZIPDJ, RockAmerica, BPM (Beats Per Minute), Rock&Soul DJ Record Pool (NYC), Dance Music Report, Promo Only, Ultimix, IDRC (NY), Streetbeat Record Pool (NY), Sure Shot Record Pool (Chicago), Direct Music Service. But MrOllie keeps deleting my edits for some reason. Wikirapguru (talk) 13:28, 18 July 2025 (UTC) @Edward Myer: As a fellow music lover, can you help me to improve this article? Pinging people you think will agree with you will not help matters, see WP:CANVASS. MrOllie (talk) 20:57, 18 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
WP:LTTAUTMAOK, MrOllie.
Wikirapguru is clearly editing in good faith. I've looked at the disputed section, and there are some good sources there. The much bigger issue with this article is the lack of better sources to support the copy in general. I'll work on adding a few.Trumpetrep (talk) 01:36, 19 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Wikirapguru has been engaged in spamming Wikipedia and is trying to force a mention of one of their business partners onto this article. That's not good faith. MrOllie (talk) 01:45, 19 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I'll keep an eye out for any conflicts of interest.Trumpetrep (talk) 02:10, 19 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I did a quick edit of the early history section, beefing it up with better sources. The Thompson article is a gold mine for the evolution of the practice.
As for the disputed section, I removed any pools that didn't have a credible source or its own Wikipedia article.Trumpetrep (talk) 06:03, 19 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I removed the list again, since we are still not supposed to be including vendor lists, and it still contained the unreliable / self published spam link as a citation. MrOllie (talk) 14:43, 19 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Which is the link in question?
I don't think the article benefits a great deal by listing individual pools that are currently operating, but it's also clearly germane to explain that this industry practice is still used. The citations you removed have information that explain how pools currently operate. Perhaps that would be a better use of those sources.Trumpetrep (talk) 15:38, 19 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I was specifically referring to raptology.com, which is the site being pushed as linkspam. It is a self published online marketing outlet. But the other two aren't any better - the indiehiphop.net piece is an obvious advertisement, and djtechtools is affiliate marketing posted on a web store. None of these are WP:RS. MrOllie (talk) 16:00, 19 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Right you are. Sadly, all three of those links are better than the ones I removed, and sources like that are all over this site. I recently overhauled the Hip-hop article, and I was astonished how, in 2025, the bulk of the sources were archived links to defunct websites.
My practice in those situations is what I described. I try to glean useful information from the better unreliable sources and leave them in place to point other editors in the right direction. Since this article had three sources when I started, and it now has 12, it can probably do without these unreliable sources.
I'm sure other editors can dig up better sources to describe the current state of music pools. I'm grateful Wikirapguru pinged me over to this untended corner of Wikipedia's garden, and it's great that you are holding people to a better standard than the default on this site.Trumpetrep (talk) 16:20, 19 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
