Freedom fighter and Mukti Bahini (liberation force), are not one and the same thing in Bangladesh.
Mukti Bahini was an organized guerilla resistance organization or an armed force of the Bangladesh Liberation War. They initially operated as the Mukti Fauj, whereas later they gained the reputation as the Mukti Bahini. They were organized, trained, and equipped by India, who employed them together with the Allied Forces for the 1971 Indo-Pakistani war or Bangladesh Liberation War.
Freedom fighter, however, is a term used for all who actually contributed directly in the 1971 Liberation War. Freedom fighters are members of the Mukti Bahini, though broadly used for all such persons (civilian as well as military) who had contributed to the war. Each one of the participants of the war is Freedom fighters as per the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Welfare Trust Act, 2018 (Sec. 2(11)).
I.e., Mukti Bahini constituted an organized military force, while Freedom fighter is an honorific given for the people who served during the struggle, irrespective of their membership of the Mukti Bahini or not.
And the clearest difference is that Mukti Bahini is the name of an organization, while Freedom fighter is an honorary title or recognition given to participants of the war. Somajyoti✉10:24, 18 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
According to the article, all of the organized and unorganized guerilla forces fall under Mukti Bahini. So, all freedom fighters are part of Mukti Bahini. Yes. I have seen this article. In the books that have been referenced, Freedom fighter, Mukti Bahini, and Muktijoddha have been mixed and blended together. Also, in Bengali, Bahini and Joddha often imply similar meanings.
