Situated on the banks of the river Ghataprabha, Mudhol draws its name from 'Mudduvalalu" which means "Cute River" (Muddu= Cute and Holalu=River) in Old Kannada (Halegannada).

It was a princely state under the rule of the British in India. The Ghorpade clan belonging to the Maratha community ruled until it acceded to the Indian Union in 1948.

It is also known as 'Nayee mudhol' which means Dog's mudhol in kannada. It is so known because of the a famous breed of hunting dogs (Mudhol Hounds) available at Mudhol.

It is famous for its literary feats. Ranna, a kannada poet of renown is popularly known as "Maha Kavi" or the Great poet, in recognition of his contribution to the Halegannada (Old kannada) literature. The Government of karnataka has developed a stadium and is in the process of commissioning a Community hall and is also constructing a Library. All these bear his name. The agriculturists who have set up a sugar mill in the co-operative sector have also named the factory campus after him.

The hitherto agrarian economy of Mudhol is rapidly undergoing industralisation. Four sugar mills are working in Mudhol Taluka. A huge Cement Plant is under commissioning apart from three mini cement plants which are already working.

Wrestling is a famous sport patronised by the Royal Family. Even today the local athletes bag medals consistently in the state level as well as the national level competitions.

The imposing building of the King Edward Memorial Government Hospital, old Treasury Office, Royal palace, amongst others bear testimony to the grandeur of construstions using the black stone available at mudhol.
