Monifieth deserves some love...

[edit]

Monifieth is so much more than its council tax revenues... I'm going to spend a bit of time on this article in coming months. Any interested parties are more than welcome to help. Catfish Jim and the soapdish (talk) 00:50, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I'm willing to help out.Andrewmc123 (talk) 21:51, 20 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm going to be concentrating mainly on History. I'm gradually bringing across sections from previous articles I've written, particularly Carnoustie, where and when the details are essentially the same. I'm guessing you're a resident of Monifieth... how do you feel about tackling the Landmarks section? Catfish Jim and the soapdish (talk) 22:19, 20 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Landmarks?

[edit]

What sort of landmarks are in Monifieth. I live there and there isn't anything particularly special. Andrewmc123 (talk) 21:51, 24 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Landmarks don't have to be particularly exciting. Take a look at what I wrote for Carnoustie. That follows the Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements guidelines, and made GA, which I'm aiming to get Monifieth up to (it's a fair way off at the moment.)
Basically you want to write about the War Memorial, including when it was dedicated, and who designed it. You want to write about any Grade A listed buildings, sites of tourism and notable natural landmarks.
I would personally include the more interesting Grade B listed buildings as well (I can't imagine there are too many Grade A's). Here's a search result for them on Historic Scotland's website:

http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/index/heritage/historicandlistedbuildings/listedbuildingsresults.htm?p_out=xml&p_all=monifieth&p_couname=0&p_parbur=0

That result includes anything with Monifieth in the listing, so should get everything in the town. It might also bring up some oddities that have little or no connection, as well as buildings in Monifieth Parish... I would tend to include these.
Natural Landmarks include Crow Hill and the Dighty burn.Catfish Jim and the soapdish (talk) 10:47, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I wasn't too sure about what to include so this helps a lot. I'll start writing about it tomorrow, as today I am busy in real life. Andrewmc123 (talk) 14:35, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
I've completed the part on the mills, I will tackle the war memorial in the next few days.Andrewmc123 22:35, 1 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
It's looking good. Catfish Jim and the soapdish (talk) 18:37, 3 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Suggestions

[edit]

Hopefully I've encouraged Andrewmc123 into taking Monifieth to GA (and possibly the other major Angus towns as a WP:Good topic?) I've already given him a bit of feedback directly but I guess it's more appropriate here. The main thing it needs is just a bit of a copyedit - for instance eliminating single-sentence paragraphs, and excessive detail where it breaks up the "flow", particularly in the lead. It's a good exercise to just say it out loud. You can never have too many references <g> - you should aim for at least one per paragraph, including all potentially controversial statements. The citation needed for the horses dragging cargo across the beach needs to be sorted out! And there's a couple of phrases that verge on WP:WEASELry - "subsidise" is an emotive word and ref 41 doesn't actually use it, even if that's the general thrust of the Scotsman article about the "council tax merger", I'd rephrase it more closely to what was actually said. And "With the formation of a Council and Officials, it progressed into the next century as a reasonably desirable place to live." is not just a non-sequitur, it's rather subjective and verging on WP:OR. Apart from WP:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements mentioned above, it's worth looking at the smaller towns in Category:FA-Class UK geography articles for inspiration. Also WP:Good article criteria, WP:LEAD and the WP Physics cheatsheet for other ideas. But it's really not that far off GA. Le Deluge (talk) 16:16, 8 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Article review

[edit]

It has been a while since this article has been reviewed, so I took a look and noticed lots of uncited statements, including entire paragraphs and the "Education" section. The "Demography" section also needs to be updated with the latest census figures. Should this article go to WP:GAR? Z1720 (talk) 04:47, 27 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
