[edit]It should be noted when reading this article that there is no such thing as a standard 3-inch or 5-inch CD. The standard sizes are 80mm (8cm) and 120mm (12cm). A 5in (127mm) CD would not fit in many current drives. Compatible CD players were marked as 8cm Mini CD capable but in the US/UK record labels confusingly chose to promote these Mini CDs as 3-inch CDs.

Clarification

"some including a 5" CD adapter to use in normal players." That is essentially true, my brother has two of them. A plastic ring of the same thickness as a CD (1.2mm), and outside diameter 120mm, inside diameter 80mm.
