"Bede tells us that Edwin of Northumbria built a palace here to supersede his residence at Yeavering." No he didn't! My copy of Bede's History (Sherley-Price's 1955 trans.) just says (book 2, chapter 14): "This residence [Ad-Gefrin, Yeavering] was abandoned by the later kings, who built another at a place called Maelmin".
