Talk:Midnight Volcano

This article may describe the geological area/origin of Midnight volcano. In particular "all of this igneous activity has been concentrated in northwest Mississippi at the confluence of the Precambrian cratonic rift margin, the Paleozoic - Mesozoic intracratonic Reelfoot Rift, and the Mesozoic Gulf of Mexico peripheral fault zone" could be correct and useful information for the volcano.

Status as Volcano

While unscientific recent articles and older scientific references (like the 1958 Mississippi geological survey) refer to Midnight Volcano specifically, more recent scientific publications and research do not refer to a volcano, only a variety of volcanic activity spread over a region of Missisippi and Louisiana called the Monroe Uplift. (The 1958 survey mapped Midnight volcano as part of the "Sharkey Platform", the then-current term for the Monroe Uplift). There is certainly volcanism in the area, not just subsurface igneous rock, and the one well in Humphrey county found thousands of feet of volcanic rock, which sounds like a volcano (and might be where the original concept of Midnight Volcano came from).

However, Midnight isn't clearly established as a volcano (like Jackson Volcano is), and the lack of clarity is also probably tied to the lack of research and field evidence in the area. Given that there are references to Midnight Volcano as a volcano, it seems reasonable to have this article. But it would probably be more accurate scientifically to have an article about Monroe Uplift volcanic activity that includes a reference to Midnight Volcano rather than this article, which is the other way around. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Whitevelcro (talk • contribs) 20:48, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
