I am of the opinion it should be 28 March – not contesting a House election when one's division is abolished is the same as a retirement (choosing not to contest a seat in the House). This is how the Parliamentary Handbook shows it, e.g. Frank Courtnay (just realised this is another argument against the now-deleted template: the official parliamentary handbook biographical register lists the date an MP ceased to be a member as the election date if they were defeated, but as the date of dissolution of the House if they retire (don't contest) or their seat is abolished). If you're referring to the fact that Ananda-Rajah is running for the Senate, I don't think that changes anything – it's a different house and the term won't start until 1 July. I'll see if I can find any examples of seat abolition leading to a Senate run, but I can't think of any off-hand. As far as I can tell, these dates are based on when the MPs are paid until – according to the Parliamentary Allowances Act 1952:
The allowances to a member of the House of Representatives who is a member of that House immediately before the dissolution or expiration of that House and is a candidate for election as a member of the House of Representatives at the next following general election shall be reckoned to and including the day next before the day of his re-election or of the election of his successor, as the case may be.
This specifies that the member must re-nominate for the House of Representatives (although could be a different seat) to continue to receive allowances after dissolution (and be considered part of the MPs term, according to the parliamentary handbook). --Canley (talk) 22:34, 13 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
