Subject is notable under WP:NACADEMIC point 3, as a fellow of a major scholarly society which reserves fellow status as a highly selective honor (the American Math. Society). I believe that he's also notable for the impact of Macaulay2 (which is anyway why he was selected as fellow), but any one condition from the NACADEMIC list suffices.
