Star Lane cutting
[edit]Can anyone identify this more precisely? File:Brighton Limited, Star Lane cutting, Coulsdon (Howden, Boys' Book of Locomotives, 1907).jpg I've had a look through Google Maps etc., but can't tell which line, which bridge or even which direction it's looking in. This picture is looking north towards Star Bridge, Hooley - the train is travelling towards Brighton. The crossovers and signal box visible are clearly marked on the 1:2500 O.S. map and the newness of the cutting indicates that it must be the Quarry Line. --Das48 (talk) 09:51, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. Google Streetview can't get me to that location, but I think this is the other side of the same bridge. (Quarry Line is the more westerly?) I'm slghtly surprised that I'd expected the East end of this bridge to be obviously higher, as per the photo. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:17, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I am sure you are right. The Quarry line is the most westerly line at this point. The bridge is called Star Bridge on the contemporary OS map, but appears to have been renamed. I expect you already know that the locomotive in the picture is a LB&SCR H1 class Atlantic No.40.--Das48 (talk) 21:57, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
