Officers killed in the line of duty
[edit]This section, as it currently stands, is largely lifted from the Police Roll of Honour Trust page for Merseyside, with the addition of PC Neil Doyle, who was killed whilst off duty. Although each entry is short, this would seem to be within the scope of WP:COPYPASTE.
There are a number of possible definitions, all in use in different places, which result in different lists:
- The most restrictive is that used in the article List of British police officers killed in the line of duty, which includes only "those who were killed as a direct result of a crime or while attempting to prevent, stop or solve a specific criminal act", thereby listing two Merseyside officers (PCs Davenport and Phillips).
- Merseyside Police's own physical memorial plaques, visible through a glass partition from the public area of their HQ reception, include those officers who were killed whilst actually on duty (including accidents), thereby listing seven officers (PCs Davenport, Jones, Byers, Shelton, Shevlin, Shreeve, and Phillips).
- The Police Roll of Honour Trust additionally includes officers killed travelling to/from duty, as well as those injured on duty who died some time afterwards, thereby including five further officers.
- The list in the Merseyside Police article further includes PC Doyle (who was not on duty, albeit it appears probable that he was attacked because he was recognised as a police officer), whilst PC Briggs (who died 18 months after a collision en route to duty) has not been added.
It strikes me that the best thing to do — rather than essentially duplicating the Trust's list (but then tweaking the definition a bit and failing to keep it up to date) — would be to simply replace the list with a link to the Roll of Honour.
