Previous peer review

I've listed this article for peer review because since its previous one in 2014, it has been expanded drastically, many things have happened and since been added to the article with the best of my ability. I tried to remain as objective and informative as I could whilst providing information that I believed was useful/important to the article. It would be cool to get feedback!

Comments from Arconning

[edit]

Here are the comments I'd say from a thorough skim (quite the contrast). Arconning (talk) 12:58, 26 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! I applied all of these except for "rockonthenet" because these were citations I got from the White Stripes' awards list, which is a Featured List, so I figured it was reviewed. Watagwaan (talk) 07:04, 28 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
  • The source in the lead citing White's birthday can be removed as it's already mentioned within the body. A better source could be provided as I've seen some more reliable sources citing her birthday.
  • "including "In the Cold, Cold Night"." Could be rewritten as "including in the song...".
  • The first mention of "The White Stripes" should be wikilinked.
  • I doubt "www.rockonthenet.com's" is a reliable source, this could be switched for something better.
  • On the Icky Thump tour, the bass drum head design was switched to a button inspired by the Pearlies clothing Jack and Meg wore for the album cover. She also used Remo and Ludwig drumheads, various percussion instruments and Vater drumsticks., unsourced.
  • White's Pearl Export bass drum—complete with original peppermint-painted bass drum that she used with the band's first show—and the Pearly Queen outfit she wore in the photos for the Icky Thump album, were featured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame "Women Who Rock" exhibition., source should be fixed to a live one (or an archived version of the citation).
  • incredible hulk,, sic?
  • Wikipedia:Citation overkill in "Personal life" and "Accolades and achievements"?

"Retired" musician discussion

[edit]

Hey folks! So, Meg White did cease performing and leave the industry when the White Stripes formally disbanded in 2011, which is why her "Years active" ends at 2011. But without an official statement from Meg herself saying she retired, this is why we haven't put "retired musician" or "former musician". If this is not correct (I was going off previous reverts and other editor's comments) by all means we can amend it. Watagwaan (talk) 18:09, 3 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Watagwaan: Hi, I think I can swing in either direction; what are the arguments of the previous editors for not mentioning directly that she's retired? I tried to search for effective examples on other pages, but only found Daniel Day-Lewis who both time announced that he's retiring, thus the page said he was retired. Meg White didn't announce, but she ceased to work in the music (i.e. retired). To take a side, I would revert the changes that said she's retired to play it safe; and then a reader can come up with their own label for Meg's status. —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 18:58, 3 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Got it! It's the first time it's been fully talked out, really, so I don't mind changing it now. Watagwaan (talk) 21:44, 3 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi again, I'll pick up your nomination (complete 1/3 of review today and finish tomorrow european time). Probably will do minor edits myself, which we can discuss here if needed. —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 19:01, 3 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your work! I'm going to promote the article, but I still a little bit worried about the number of quotes in the article. It's legally at a good level, but if you find the quotes that can be rephrased, detail a fact that difficult to misinterpret, they can be safely rephrased. Opinions by critics are nice, especially 1-4 word ones, maybe the longer one can be worked on. Don't think about it TOO much. Here's helpful read about the use of quotations (WP:OQ). —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 16:44, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

General thing

[edit]

Some of the references aren't format with templates (e.g. template:cite web}} or template:cite magazine) —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 10:47, 4 May 2025 (UTC)  DoneReply

Some of the references present in the article were there from WAY BACK when, before I start editing and adding to the article. That may be why they're not formatted correctly. How would I go about doing so/finding the ones that aren't? Watagwaan (talk) 18:24, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Checked for formating troubles, and I guess I/you already tweaked them (one of them was Spin magazine, not formatted into template:cite magazine). —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 12:30, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Influence

...Peggy O'Neill of The Gories and Moe Tucker of the Velvet Underground, the latter of which critics often likened White's playing to. → ...Peggy O'Neill of The Gories and Moe Tucker of the Velvet Underground, the latter of which often compared by music critics with White. Reason: Clarity; simplification. —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 10:47, 4 May 2025 (UTC)  DoneReply

Applied! Thank you. Watagwaan (talk) 18:25, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Far Out (magazine) is not the best source according to WP:A/S and I would remove it, luckily it seems we already have other sources verifying the same stuff Far Out verified (I would double-check that this is the case). — LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 19:29, 3 May 2025 (UTC)  DoneReply

Removed them! Thank you. Watagwaan (talk) 18:27, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
There are three more; they are written this way: "faroutmagazine.co.uk" —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 12:30, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Okay, NOW they're removed. Watagwaan (talk) 13:15, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

In 1998, they were approached by Dave Buick, the owner of Detroit-based independent record label Italy Records.. I don't think this source verifies this sentence. —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 19:29, 3 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

To be fair, this was taken from the White Stripes article (the sentence and everything). If anything, we could remove "the owner" or reword it differently. Watagwaan (talk) 21:47, 3 May 2025 (UTC)  DoneReply
No, no, I couldn't find the "1998" date and the fact that Dave Buick approached them, but this source confirms the date and names Buick. I think we should remove Trakmarx. —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 10:47, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I'm sorry I misunderstood! I'll add this in and remove Trakmarx, thank you! Watagwaan (talk) 18:30, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Biography.com link is broken and I couldn't revive it; only found this article. —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 19:29, 3 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

That article you linked, however, doesn't talk about her highschool. I added it as a reference and I will comb for an alternative later; if I can't find one we can possibly remove the sentence or add a citation needed template. Watagwaan (talk) 21:49, 3 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
I searched for mentions of Meg + the high school and searched for the quote cited by the biography.com; nothing found. I found this semi-interview, where Meg says "I was very, very shy. But back then, I was shy to the point where I didn't speak. [laughs] I guess I'm just not so good at socializing. Other than that, it was pretty normal." I think it can be added and the sentence about her high school and the quote from the classmate removed. —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 12:30, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Got it, thank you! Watagwaan (talk) 13:18, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

This may be a curious article. —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 19:29, 3 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

That was apart of the 2023 controversy detailed in the Retrospective analysis and legacy section. I didn't add it because Jack's side/response has been covered both in the Wikipedia article and by a bunch of other media outlets. Watagwaan (talk) 21:51, 3 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, in the morning I see it now; there are TONS of sources! —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 10:47, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
YUP! It was a huge thing that happened, it was kind of tough to pick out a few sources with how many there were. Watagwaan (talk) 18:31, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Audio

[edit]

I also noticed a bot removed audiofile; I'll try to figure out why and can we return it. —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 10:58, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

It happened twice, it's a bit strange. Not sure, I've never used the bots. Watagwaan (talk) 18:34, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
I checked, I think it's connected to the fact that the removed file should be listed on only one page; and the page is its own page. While seven nation army file doesn't have a file template that would notified the bot that the file is used several times. Jimi Hendrix seems to be adhering to this principle. That said, I cannot find a policy that establishes this rule. Just to simplify, I would add "In the Cold, Cold Night" sample; it also better illustrates Meg's contribution. I also will remove Seven Nation Army ): —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 12:30, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
"In the Cold, Cold, Night" also cannot be used because it's already used at In the Cold, Cold Night! —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 12:39, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
No problem, got it! Watagwaan (talk) 13:23, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

copyvios is almost green. We should paraphrase 1 or 2 of these quotes. —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 10:47, 4 May 2025 (UTC)  DoneReply

  • "It was an over-the-top take ... I don't know if Meg White herself saw that tweet. I hope not, because I imagine it wouldn't feel great to see a stranger dumping on you like that, so to Meg White: I am sorry. Really. And to women in the music business generally, who I think are disproportionately subject to this sort of shit, I am sorry to have fed that as well."
  • "The tragedy of the White Stripes is how great they would've been with a half decent drummer. Yeah yeah I've heard all the "but it's a carefully crafted sound mannnn!" takes. I'm sorry Meg White was terrible and no band is better for having shitty percussion."
  • "Years after she disappeared from the scene, either too shy or just too disinterested to continue a rock ‘n’ roll career, she seems to have been absorbed into rock orthodoxy as a great drummer by near-acclamation, and ironically stands as more of an icon than she ever did in her active years"
I shortened the first two, but left the third one because I think it's integral to keep it all. If you disagree though you can edit it. Watagwaan (talk) 18:33, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
I checked with copyvios and it still holding over the tolerable copyright violation. We MUST paraphrase something. There are three sources; thoroughly paraphrasing just one quote from each source would be enough. —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 12:30, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I used your paraphrasing (thank you!) and tried to do some of my own. Does this work? Watagwaan (talk) 13:30, 5 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
  • This one seems to be the most difficult to paraphrase (flagged by 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th sources): "The tragedy of the White Stripes is how great they would've been with a half decent drummer. […] I'm sorry Meg White was terrible and no band is better for having shitty percussion." "It was an over-the-top take [...] I don't know if Meg White herself saw that tweet. I hope not, because I imagine it wouldn't feel great to see a stranger dumping on you like that.."
  • years after she disappeared from the scene, either too shy or just too disinterested to continue a rock 'n' roll career, she seems to have been absorbed into rock orthodoxy as a great drummer by near-acclamation, and ironically stands as more of an icon than she ever did in her active years..
    • in the aftermath of her departure from music industry, Meg "seems to have been absorbed into rock orthodoxy as a great drummer by near-acclamation", and even more recognized compared to her active years.
  • This one is manageable (flagged by 2nd source): "I appreciate other kinds of drummers who play differently, but it's not my style or what works for this band. I get [criticism] sometimes, and I go through periods where it really bothers me. But then I think about it, and I realize that this is what is really needed for this band.
  • (flagged by 3rd source): "when she started to play drums with me, just on a lark, it felt liberating and refreshing. There was something in it that opened me up."
    • Gillis recalled that playing with Meg was "liberating and refreshing", opening up "something" within him.
  • (flagged by 3rd source): "That is my strength. A lot of drummers would feel weird about being that simplistic."
  • (flagged by 3rd source): "Meg is the best part of this band. It never would have worked with anybody else, because it would have been too complicated... It was my doorway to playing the blues."
    • Jack lauded her style as the band's best element, and he couldn't imagine recording with anybody other than Meg, "because it would have been too complicated... It was my doorway to playing the blues".
  • (flagged by 4th and 5th sources): "I appreciate other kinds of drummers who play differently, but it's not my style or what works for this band. I get [criticism] sometimes, and I go through periods where it really bothers me. But then I think about it, and I realize that this is what is really needed for this band. And I just try to have as much fun with it as possible".

I would also paraphrase instances where the meaning can be easily sustained when paraphrased (per WP:OQ). I transformed some of them myself. Other examples: —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 11:28, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

  • "full of choices most drummers wouldn't make, and that's why she's such a unique player."
  • "A guest appearance would be amazing. I wouldn't want to be in a Lisa episode. They're kind of boring. Maybe a Homer one would be better."
  • "one of my favorite fucking drummers of all time. Like, nobody fucking plays the drums like that."

ALT2 ... that as of 2023, Meg White (pictured), described as a key figure in the 2000s garage-rock revival, has not made any public appearances since 2009?
ALT2 also takes into account Amakuru's concerns regarding the "key figure" claim. I'm not fond of the "as of 2023" qualifier, but without it the hook would likely be making a trip to WP:ERRORS. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 22:28, 16 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

    == Sort of a peer review ==

Comments from Noleander, in response to request from user Watagwaan for suggestions to make sure the article is ready for an FA nomination:

    • Images will need "alt" text WP:ALT. The alt text should describe the visual aspects of the image (as if describing it to a blind person) and not simply restate the caption.
    • Jack vs Jackson: I suggest using only one first name throughout the entire article, even the InfoBox. Otherwise, readers may think that is two different people. The full name (Jackson) can be mentioned once, perhaps in the InfoBox as "Jackson (Jack)" then use Jack in all the body text.
    • Paragraph William Bowers of Pitchfork celebrated himself in a 2002 article for not talking "covetously" about White's body. While Kilian and Schreiber at Pitchfork praised White's drumming, Brent DiCrescenzo called it "pancake-handed" and "sloppy" in 2003; ... Thoughts on this paragraph:
      • The theme of the paragarph is not clear. I'm guessing it is a collection of negative reviews of White, and other attacks on her. If so, that should be stated in the first sentence e.g. "White received negative criticism from ..."
      • The first sentence: William Bowers of Pitchfork celebrated himself in a 2002 article for not talking "covetously" about White's body. His statement is just weird. Unless other sources have called-out Bowers for misogyny (who is saying that Bowers "celebrated" himself"?) I don't think the sentence belongs in the article.
      • Consider adding wikilink to Pitchfork (website) ... duplicate links are permitted if the first link is in another major section.
    • White's public presence and strict maintenance of her privacy has also been the subject of significant commentary; as of 2025, she has not made any public appearances since 2009.. Should "public presence and" be deleted? Or replaced by "reclusive nature" or "reclusiveness"?
    • Semicolons are great: As a member of the White Stripes, she was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023 and inducted in 2025; she is the third female drummer to be inducted. As a fellow user of semicolons, I'm glad to see a few in this article. Have a response handy in case an FA reviewer objects to them.
    • "interim" between what? During the interim, she appeared at ... Readers may get confused: usually "interim" is used after two events are named (e.g. arrive in a city, and depart a city). But I cannot tell what the two events this "interim" is between here. Suggest re-word to clarify the time-span.
    • White worked at Memphis Smoke, a restaurant in ... Is the name of the restaurant necessary? Normally, the name would only be provided if it were famous, or if the particular employment was significant to the story.
    • Commas after dates when starting a sentence: In 1997 White began learning to play the... and In 1999, the band signed with the ... The article uses a comma after the year in some places, not others. Either way is valid, but FA will want it uniform. Some say that US style uses the comma, and UK style does not.
    • Role in the film? She was chosen by Bob Odenkirk to compose .. consider inserting role "director" before Odenkirk's name. Reason: where possible, you want to help readers so they do not have to click a link & view a second article to get a full understanding of the sentence.
    • the resonant heads of the toms and bass drum almost exclusively ... Can the word resonant be deleted? I cannot tell if that's a special adjective for a type of head, or if it's a normal resonance like an echo. Consider deleting the word "resonant" or clarify what the word means in that context. Consider adding a wiki link to the word "head".
Here's what I fixed so far
    • Added alt text
    • Jack vs Jackson is because it refers to two different people: Jack White, and her former second husband Jackson Smith
    • Reworded the William Bowers sentence because I still think it is important to include. Wikilinked, didn't realize it wasn't
    • Replaced "public presence" with "reclusive nature"
    • Changed "interim" to "hiatus"
    • "Memphis Smoke" removed
    • The 1997 comma was changed by someone else when they removed the Bastille Day mention. Fixed that one.
    • Added role
    • Removed resonant (head was already wikilinked apparently)
Thank you for the compliment on semicolons! I love semicolons with all my heart and I'm scared to overuse them sometimes. Watagwaan (talk) 01:17, 23 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
While you're here @Noleander I did have another question: on other FAs I've seen musicians having a "Life and career" section as opposed to "Early life", "Career" and "Personal life" — should they be merged? Also, does "Artistry" or "Musicianship" fit better? (Something I also saw in FAs) Watagwaan (talk) 00:02, 24 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
It is definitely better to split those topics into separate sections: early life, career, personal life... Provided there is sufficient material for each section, and in this case I think there is.
As for the word choice of artistry or musicianship, I think either one is fine. Artistry might be more generic and more encyclopedic, but you can't go wrong with either one.
One thing you need to do before submitting for FA is to re-read every source. When you nominate for FA, you're promising the reviewers that you have personally read all the sources. Not the entire source, but the sentences related to the material you're citing.
Also before nominating, double check that the source material accurately supports the sentence in the article. It is considered a faux pas if they don't match. Noleander (talk) 00:59, 24 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I will go through the sources as I have time! I remember a GA reviewer had helped with this so I think, for the most part, we'll be clear. Watagwaan (talk) 03:33, 24 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I looked thru the article again, now, and it is looking great! It is probably in a condition where you can nominate it at FAC. If you want to be more positive before nominating, you can do one more peer review. If you want another peer review (rather than waiting for a volunteer) it is always best to reach out and contact editors that (a) have successfully promoted several articles to FA status; and (b) are active on WP nearly every day. 99% of the time they will be happy to help. As for me: if you have any specific questions on the FA process, or this article, ask me anytime. Good luck! Noleander (talk) 20:02, 4 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Noleander you've been a great help. I will nominate it at FAC as there's been multiple reviewers on the article and I feel bad asking for more than I have to. Since I started working on the article, I did my best in structuring/writing in example of other FAs of musicians particularly. Thank you so much for everything, I feel great about it now and will hope for the best! Watagwaan (talk) 18:33, 5 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

    Lead Paragraph

    [edit]

    The opening paragraph of an article should "should define or identify the topic with a neutral point of view". It should get the main points of the subject's notability over and summarise what the article says. The lead paragraph as it stands;

    • Suggests that the second most notable fact the reader needs to know about White is that she performed backing vocals for the band and occasionally sang lead.
    • Suggests that the third most notable fact about White is that she sang on a B-side of a single.
    • Suggests that the fourth most notable fact about White is that she didn't write lyrics.

I believe that none of these are among the most notable things about White, or are among the first things that a reader should know about her. A band member contributing backing vocals, or even the occasional lead, is very, very common. White does not stand out in this regard. What White didn't do is hardly more notable that what she did.

Facts about White that I'd suggest are far more informative, significant and deserving of this prominence:

    • She played garage rock
    • She won six Grammy Awards from twelve nominations
    • She quit due to performance anxiety
    • She was in a married duo.

The "best known as" phrase is also pointless beating about the bush, and introduces a needless claim without any source. It's the lead, it says what's most notable. If it wasn't most notable, it should not be there. So rather than making claims about how unidentified people might best know her, why not just say what she was and what makes her notable?

I would therefore suggest the lead is re-written so that it actually leads with what's significant, rather than unremarkable tangents of no importance. Escape Orbit (Talk) 16:47, 15 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

I reworked the lead. This should be better! Watagwaan (talk) 17:57, 15 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

    Post FAC review

Recommend you remove or replace these sources

    • uDiscover Music - reads like a torrent site, and is their editorial control?
    Removed this one.
    • WRAT - a radio station where th DJ's are talking off the cuff
    Removed this one.
    • Euronews - with regard to music they seem to just recycle press releases
You're right but this seems like an original article in this case.
Fine. The comparison to Ringo Starr's "deceptively simple style" is perceptive. Ceoil (talk) 20:58, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
    Removed a bit, how's this? Watagwaan (talk) 23:41, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
    • Metro Times - could be described as a local rag written by low-paid journalists that will praise local bands regardless
I can remove the first Metro Times but the second Metro Times source actually seems okay.
    • I would use more of Handyside's 2004 book , it's excellent and does a better job at describing her difficult transition between high school and first jobs than our article does...really needs to be fleshed out, as really think it's reflective of her drumming style.
I will definitely look into it more and expand how I can! I don't want to copy-paste from the book but I will try to flesh it out, I really agree with you.

have to go now, more later Ceoil (talk) 11:24, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Just saw this, but thank you @Ceoil! Watagwaan (talk) 22:19, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Ceoil How's this? Tried to expand with some of the information I found. Watagwaan (talk) 18:41, 4 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

    Peer review

    [edit]
    Previous peer review

I've listed this article for peer review because I want to try pushing this for FAC again; I've tried to not only correct all the notes from beforehand, but take lessons from it to do my best to improve this article, copyedit it where it seemed needed, and create something that is truly worth it. I want to get a peer review because I know I can't do it by myself, and I love hearing the feedback I've gotten in the past from others, even the most brutal ones.

Thanks, Watagwaan? I really like the color red! 13:42, 20 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Watagwaan this hasn't seen any progress in 2 months so I'm going to close it. RoySmith (talk) 18:01, 24 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

At first thought I was squeeze out of suggestion, but ended up writing some. —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 14:56, 20 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

    • I don't remember whether it previously came up, it would be nice to track down a link for ref 93 (spin article).
It was originally published in a Spin magazine but I can't find it linked anywhere. Worst comes to worse, we could always remove that review and either replace it or leave it as it is.
So in my research, it seems like this was published in the November 2002 of Modern Drummer magazine, and this interview was posted and archived by Jim DeRogatis himself on his own site. Maybe we could switch the format to "Cite magazine" then link this? Because I can't find any other link with this.
I like how it is now, if that's okay!
    • We should cite Martha, Meg's middle name, in the early life section (not sure it is cite currently)
Last I checked, either the Handyside/True books stated it. I can doublecheck when I'm home later.

Thank you LastJabberwocky! Always great to see you! Watagwaan? I really like the color red! 17:54, 20 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
