The term Southern Mbundu has been used for the Ambundu living in the Southern part of the Ambundu region. Oliver and Atmore use it for those in the area where the Ndongo Kingdom developed, who are Ambundu and speak Kimbundu. See R.Oliver and A. Atmore, Medieval Africa 1250-1800, Cambridge University Press, 2001, page 168.
