It might be possible to get NFUR/NFCC of a screenshot that illustrates his winning streak, like the 39 day cash winnings on screen display at the start of his 40th game, but it would need to go in the Jeopardy section and not the infobox. -- 64.229.90.53 (talk) 22:31, 17 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Looks like this has once again been restored, again, without any citation(s), likely as a result of this. Should it be removed once more, or are we able to find any source(s) supporting this? If this is constantly going to be edit warred, might be worth requesting protection as well. Magitroopa (talk) 04:53, 17 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I saw Matt last night on Jeopardy speaking about his wiki page and how an editor has kept removing "mathematician" from the lead, I don't know if we can add it in with wiki-voice as a fact in the lead paragraph if we do not have reliable sourcing labeling him as one, however what do editors think about addressing the fact (and possibility of inclusion) with WP:BLPSELFPUB policy?? His LinkedIn is available here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthew-amodio-20b9707b/. He's a postdoc specializing in computational biology and AI. I'm comfortable shortening that to "mathematician," but if you'd prefer "computational biologist and computer scientist," that's fine. Regardless, for biography of a living person, you should probably at least reference their day-to-day job. ~2026-10772-68 (talk) 20:51, 17 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Wozal has objected to using LinkedIn here and as follows: "WP:LINKEDIN Wikipedia is not a directory of any subject's complete web presence, and links to social networking sites (other than official links) are discouraged (ELNO#10). Information is not typically encyclopedic in nature. As a reliable source, LinkedIn is problematic in the same ways as MySpace, Facebook, etc. as self-published and unverifiable, unreliable content." There are no citations whatsoever just for "mathematician". The lead edit at 21:32 on 17 February 2026 has him as an "actuarial science mathematician" here with an outdated citation from the first university from which he graduated, but his own LinkedIn page here shows his occupation as a "Full-time" "Postdoctoral Researcher" with "a focus in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence...interested in data-driven decision making", not actuarial science. In any case, so far he is not known for or notable for any occupation, and his past or present occupation doesn't comply with MOS:OPENPARABIO, MOS:CONTEXTBIO, or MOS:ROLEBIO. Much as we might want to include his occupation, as Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and WP:NOTEVERYTHING, we should abide by the contents of WP:NOT and Wikipedia#Content policies and guidelines. Agree that the article might be worth requesting protection. Quaerens-veritatem (talk) 21:50, 17 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
In that clip, he’s not saying he’s not a notable mathematician, he’s ascribing that assessment to the Wikipedia editors.
Matt: “But one editor is always very careful to remove the ‘and mathematician’ parts.”
Regarding a prior comment to me about how he does not have a present long term occupation, this is untrue. Per the J-archive, he is a quantitative researcher in New York City at the time of the Jeopardy Invitational Tournament 2026 airing and was one during his 2023-2025 appearances on the show as well: https://j-archive.com/showplayer.php?player_id=18348.
I will refer to other publicly stated and verified facts about him once I find the relevant videos. These are things he has said himself on the show and in interviews. Sss20a (talk) 07:19, 20 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Not sure the first ref is sufficient to use as a citation. It also doesn't state a time period, if he's been doing such long term in any event, or any accomplishments. Also, during his run he was a student without an occupation, and a post doc is just education continuation with "mentored research or scholarly training for the purpose of acquiring the professional skills needed to pursue a career path." See, Postdoctoral researcher#United States. There also remains a question as to citations especially since articles should rely on secondary sources, as well as the noteworthiness of position(s) or role(s) and, in any event, the emphasis is supposed to be on what makes the person notable. Also MOS:OPENPARABIO, MOS:CONTEXTBIO, MOS:ROLEBIO apply. Quaerens-veritatem (talk) 07:33, 20 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Just add "mathematician" as shorthand for what he does. Although he is most notable for his Jeopardy wins, it is not unreasonable to include a one-word description of his occupation outside of the show in the title. His work is clearly significant and even if not enough on its own to warrant an entry, it is reasonable to mention it briefly as it rounds out the description and as being a Jeopardy super champion naturally leads one to inquire as to his occupation. End the war on a compromise. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Brencf (talk • contribs) 16:07, 20 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
While playing he was a student studying computer science (not mathematics) at Yale University from which he graduated with a PhD in the spring of 2022. This is in the article, so informs the reader of what he was doing during the relevant period. After Jeopardy! he was with Uhler Lab and only 2022–2023. Apparently he's now with PDT Partners a hedge fund company, but there is no source stating his position. So, "mathematician" (see, mathematician "is someone who uses an extensive knowledge of mathematics in their work...") is not supported by the article, is not supported by sources, and is misleading.
