- According to this MathOverflow answer, the etymology seems to be that a pencil represents a group bound by a property. Saung Tadashi (talk) 21:07, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
The first line of the article is disjoint from the rest
[edit]On the first line of the article, the matrix pencil of degree l for a sequence of matrices A_l is defined. The rest of the article discusses the seemingly unrelated problem of A - lambda B, which (I guess) comes from the formulation on the first line by choosing A_0 = A and A_1 = -B.
