Matahari
[edit]In Bahasa Indonesia, mata hari would mean 'eye of the day', which is very poetic, but I'm not convinced it is the etymology of the famous Matahari. However in Sanskrit, matahari would mean 'blessed mother' or something, Sanskrit forms compounds easily and creatively. - OK, I checked it out myself, it seems right. "Mata Hari" lived in Medan for some time. Curiously, she was heavily into Hindu culture and literature. We'll probably never know, but she may have appreciated the way her stage name works in two unrelated languages (at least as far as the specific words of the name are concerned).
