"We have made Italy; now we must make Italians"

[edit]

This quote is often attributed (online) to d'Azeglio. Did he say it? Other sources says this well-known expression is "actually a misquotation, [even though] it captures a sense of the work that goes into nation-building." What's the scoop? —Preceding unsigned comment added by DBrnstn (talk • contribs) 01:52, 12 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm almost certain I've seen this quoted by Hobsbawm (although I can't remember where) and I've definitely seen other historians attribute it to him. Capt. Eduardo del Mango (talk) 19:36, 18 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Eric Hobsbawm does indeed cite this translation in The Invention of Tradition, eds. Hobsbawm and Ranger, University Press, Cambridge, 1983, p. 267VictorLacy (talk) 04:48, 6 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
