Jeremy Belknap & Pegleg Coffin

Jeremy Belknap has a footnote on page 232-233 of Vol II of "American Biography", ca 1797-8, where he includes a note from Pegleg Coffin of Nantucket, who links Edgartown Harbor to "Whitson's Bay."

Issue with "1603 North American voyage" segment

To start, "voyage" in the title needs to begin with a capital letter "V" However my reason for writing is that the first paragraph of that section conflicts with information found in "The History of the Society of Merchant Venturers of the City of Bristol" by John Latimer, 1903, J.W. Arrowsmith, Bristol England. For 1000 pounds, the Speedwell, described as having a 50 ton burden (NOT 60) and diminutive companion, Discoverer was 20 ton were outfitted. The wikipedia article has a debate over whether or not the ship was Discoverer or Explorer and states this smaller "barque" was Speedwell's escort. Two sources could not collide more.

Latimer specified that Speedwell and Discoverer under command of Pring departed from Kingroad on March 23rd, reached their destination (Northern Virginia) in June, stayed in a harbor in Massachusetts for two months in a place Pring named "Whitson" that later became "Plymouth" where the Pilgrim Fathers landed 17 years later and arrived back in Bristol in October. Latimer's source was an account written by Pring's "Purchas's Pilgrim." The Wikipedia article has a different date and mentions Sir Walter Raleigh that was not given in Latimer's history.

I didn't bother to edit the article because I do not have time to determine which version is correct. It's kind of sad that this guy who arrived before the Pilgrims has such a poorly written Wikipedia article about his arrival and could really stand being rewritten with documented fact, and elimination of the obnoxious little "fact war" that it also contains. ~2026-32293-70 (talk) 17:59, 31 May 2026 (UTC)
