1. The list of quotations & testamonia at mythagora.com appears to be a copy of the relevant passage in H.G Evelyn-White, Hesiod, The Homeric Hymns and Homerica (Cambridge: Harvard, 1914), pp. 536-539. The quotations of the surviving lines in this article have combined two excerpts into one.
2. M.L. West, in his Greek Lyric Poetry (Oxford: 1993) mentions a passage from Margites: "Ancient allusions indicate that the main episode dealt with Margites' wedding night. He had no idea what to do with his bride, until she told him that a scorpion bit her between the legs, and that the wound could only be healed by the insertion of a man's penis." (p. xvi)
3. West in the same book includes a further excerpt, which appears to have come from a fragment of papyrus. This excerpt describes Margites getting his hand & penis stuck in a clay pot, & freeing himself by accidentally running into a rock. (p. 84)

It appears that recent scholarship has added a few bits to our threadbare knowledge of this lost poem. -- llywrch (talk) 13:45, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
