This can't be right as stated.
[edit]The last sentence of the article is this:
"A deep result of Thurston states that in this case the 3-manifold Mf is hyperbolic if and only if f is a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of S."
Perhaps this would be correct if it read:
"A deep result of Thurston states that in this case the 3-manifold Mf is hyperbolic if and only if f is isotopic to a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of S."
