Doubt that. Messerschmidt was born in 1926, this cohort (and even 1927) was already called up as Luftwaffenhelfer/Flakhelfer in 1943. Spring 1944 would be a reasonable date for the beginning of his Wehrmacht service; see from an interview in 2000: Messerschmidt: Ich war in Dortmund bei verschiedenen Flakbatterien, und wir erlebten, wie 1943 Bomberströme über die Stadt flogen, und im Grunde konnte gar nichts dagegen getan werden. Diese Flakbatterien bestanden aus älteren Soldaten, sie waren Geschützführer, Flakhelfern, wir hatten die Richtung der Kanonen einzustellen, und aus russischen Gefangenen, die die Granaten schleppten. Das war die Heimatflak, so wie ich sie kenne und erlebt habe. I was in Dortmund at several flak batteries, and we saw in 1943 bomber streams flying over the city, and in the end nothing could be done about that. These flak batteries consisted of older soldiers, they were section chiefs, flakhelfer, we had to adjust the direction of the guns, and russian POW, who hauled the grenades.
