The better known Hierapolis is situated on top of the Pamukkale hot springs. Hierapolis was redirected to this article here, so I removed the redirect and started a proper article there. --Matthead 15:43, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

The Hierapolis I know is no where near the Euphrates. It's in the Meander river valley, just up slope from Pamukkale, waaay over on the western edge of the Anatolian plateau. Is there some conflation going on here? --Fulminouscherub 00:18, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

I agree -- this is not the same spa-resort Hierapolis that is part of the Pamukkale World Heritage Site near Denizli. -- CMP, 11 Feb 06

They are of the wrong site. One is a reverse shot of a photo illustrating the other site, and the photos used for both pages are from the same (Turkish) photographer. I cannot find any shots of this site (there are many locations mixing up the two), but Google satellite images seem to indicate a complete lack of above ground remains.--Bluegreen 23:57, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Deucalion ref

The 2nd century writer Lucian gave an account of the Greek Deucalion in De Dea Syria that seems to refer more to the Near Eastern flood legends: in his version, Deucalion (whom he also calls Sisythus) took his children, their wives, and pairs of animals with him on the ark, and later built a great temple in Manbij (northern Syria), on the site of the chasm that received all the waters; he further describes how pilgrims brought vessels of sea water to this place twice a year, from as far as Arabia and Mesopotamia, to commemorate this event.

Pronunciation?

This is an odd-looking word, and I want to say 'Manbye', as if it's Dutch. But it's Arabic, so, as spelt, 'Manbidge'? 'Manbizh'? Rothorpe (talk) 01:05, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

I do not know much about Arabic linguistics, but I believe it's pronounced [manˈbidʒ]. Can anyone confirm or contribute with an IPA module? --Spade6179 (talk) 18:55, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

Manbij status

According to the new Turkey/Russia and Syria/SDF/Russia agreements, Manbij has been fully restored under Syrian government control. See this map from RT indicating this. Sorry I couldn't find the same map on English. This warrants updating the control status of the city/area and removing this area from SDF/AAONES jurisdiction. The SAA and Russian MP entrance are already mentioned. There is literally nothing about the AANES in the infobox or categories, so I don't see what the problem is. Your blanking of sourced content is completely unreasonable and unacceptable. Lightspecs (talk) 03:39, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

This is no longer part of the autonomous administration, and referring to that in the article as the current situation is wrong. Please read the content before reverting. The map clearly shows that the area is under full Syrian government control (both administratively and militarily), unlike other areas where SAA is simply playing a military role. History part under Syrian Civil War section is messy and anachronistic

Fourth paragraph begins with "Today Manbij is..." providing details of its previous governance under DAANES but this is no longer the case since December 2024 and the paragraph shouldn't use present tense.

Kurdish name
