Ethnologue states that it is "artificially constructed from preliminary exposure to American Sign Language [ase], British Sign Language [bfi], and contact with local African countries (2016 M. Sorola)." However, that contradicts the 2017 ISO request, which Sorola was involved in, that states, "Malawian Sign Language possesses no imperialistic influences of ASL ... Malawian Sign Language has its own syntax & structure, heavily influenced by Chichewa and Chitimbuka but has no relationship or influence by ASL. We are currently in the progress of verifying the absence or presence of British Sign Language within the language," though it mentions that in a school setting it is mixed with ASL and BSL, as they have better pedagogical support. — kwami (talk) 16:40, 27 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
