[edit]I need more info about north indian mahajans , how can i get it
I dont think this article is truly correct about the north indian mahajans. As I have lived for a long time in Pathankot, I bet u will find maximum population of Mahajans here only. As i was told by my grand father . There is a difference between Mahajans. People usaully get confused by the Mahajan name. You will have to understand there were 2 types of Mahajans. one mahajan is the surname or the family name of some people living in punjab and J&K belt. But the other one is the JOB TITLE not the surname. Mahajan or the money lenders as refered in the article was a job title , a business and has nothing to do with the people with mahajan surname. The people with Mahajan surname were traders and was a high and had a respectable position in the society , thats why called MAHAJAN or the great people, they belongs to Baniya Community. Mahajan by Guru Gobind Singh
[edit]The word Mahajan came out to be symbolic of people who were money lenders. But actually as i got from my elders, we as Mahajans are caste of recent origins. In the times of war with the tyrant ruler Aurangzeb, Guru Gobind Singh gave a call to public in general to come forward and help the Khalsa. On Guru's call, many people joined the sect and the people who joined the sect were given the name "MAHAJAN". As such you will find the gotras of kshatriyas and pandits in Mahajan clan. I being Bagwathiya belong to Kashap gotra that was formed by Maharishi Kashyap and similiarly other Mahajans share gotra which originates either from a Kshatriya, Vaishya, etc. gotra. Mahajans are Vaishya
[edit]According to Vaman Puran - "Mahajano si mahalroshi mahajano yen gataa sa pantha." God Vishnu was pleased with King Kuru, and King was shifted to Vaishya. God Vishnu said to King Kuru that he has done great job and he is a great person. Therefore, your dynasty will be called MAHAJAN and all rulers will be known as Vaishya, because by doing agriculture, you have accepted Vaishya. They migrated from central India to Rajasthan and then to the Punjab region several hundred years back. A renowned social reformer Lala Hans Raj Mahajan urged people to replace "Gupt" (Modern "Gupta") with 'Mahajan' as their surname in the early 20th century
Mahajans are Brahmins too
