Biotite

- Biotite and hornblende (amphibole) are both Mg and Fe bearing minerals. However, they both often occur as accessory phases in granitic (felsic) rocks. I suppose that is why they are listed in both. Biotite is not however, a typical mineral phase in most mafic rocks and probably shouldn't be listed there. Confused yet :-) Vsmith 00:54, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

What is the table?
[edit]- I'm a bit confused by the table. Is that supposed to be all the varieties of mafic rock, or a list of all the textures of mafic rocks with an example rock for each? If it is suppose to be comprehensive, why aren't amphibolite, hornblende, or biotite (mentioned above) in the list? The article could use some a reference, as well. I know very little about this topic, so I'd rather not try to modify it myself. Agyle 04:07, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

- Generally used with a long a (as in may-fik) in the UK in my experience, but not exclusively. Mikenorton (talk) 11:09, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
- My experience is that mafic is usually pronounced as in may-fik, but when I look at the pronunciation given in dictionaries, my experience seems to be at odds with what they report (usually mah-fik, even for the UK).GeoWriter (talk) 14:56, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
"Rock Spectrum"
[edit]This sentence from the article needs clarification: "Chemically, mafic rocks are on the other side of the rock spectrum from the felsic rocks." As a layperson, I have no idea what "the rock spectrum" is. The article for Felsic makes a similar claim, referring to "the elemental spectrum," a term I find equally baffling. --Super Aardvark (talk) 21:27, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
