Requested move 10 October 2025

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: moved. So, for starters: there's a clear consensus that the cricketer's article should be moved to the plain title "Mac Wright". More fraught is the question of how to handle the DAB page; two proposals were raised, either moving it to Mack Wright or deleting it under WP:G14 since the two figures have differently rendered names. Both proposals received similar levels of support; however, the G14 approach was identified as aligned with the guideline at WP:ONEOTHER, while there doesn't seem to be as direct of a policy grounding for the "Mack Wright" proposal, so I view the discussion as reaching a narrow consensus to G14 the DAB page. As a non-admin I can't carry out the deletion myself, but I'll place the request. (closed by non-admin page mover) ModernDayTrilobite (talkcontribs) 15:10, 30 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

– The disambiguation page contains two links in its main section, one to the cricketer and one to the late actor and director Mack V. Wright. The latter, I understand, isn't in MOS:DABSEEALSO as the director was credited as "Mac Wright" for some of his work (IMDb lists one episode of a TV series).[1]

According to Pageviews Analysis, the cricketer's page recorded more than three times as many visits as the actor's one over the last 8 years.[2] This suggests to me that someone searching for Mac Wright is far more likely to be looking for the cricketer (using a name commonly used for him) rather than for the director (using a name which is seldom associated with him), and so that taking that person to a DAB page would be unhelpful.

The cricketer's article should have a hatnote to the director after this change so someone who entered the wrong term would only be one link from the right page. Neither page would need a link to the DAB page, but I'd keep the one at Wright.

What would you do about the link to Mac Wright (disambiguation) from Wright? At the moment, there are numerous DAB pages listed on Wright instead of the individual articles. If you simply deleted Mac Wright there would be no easy way to get from the surname to either person's article. Aoeuidhtns (talk) 07:51, 13 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Both the Mac Wright disambiguation page and its companion Mac Wright (disambiguation) page can be deleted as unnecessary. Also, since as of this writing, neither cricketer Mac Wright nor actor/director Mack V. Wright is listed under the entry listing people with the surname Wright#M, both men can be added to section "M", using those exact name forms, without need for addition of a disambiguation page.
There are a number of analogous examples under Wright, starting with "A", where football player Abraham Wright and Abraham Wright (deacon) are listed, without need for an Abraham Wright (disambiguation) page, although an Abraham Wright dab page may be eventually created if a successful nomination of Abraham WrightAbraham Wright (American football) is submitted. Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 22:57, 14 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
On second thought, if consensus agrees, there is an alternative to deleting the Mac Wright disambiguation page and its companion Mac Wright (disambiguation) page. The dab page could be moved to Mac WrightMack Wright and the companion page to Mac Wright (disambiguation)Mack Wright (disambiguation). The dab page would then list Mac Wright and Mack V. Wright without either one being primary. Users who type the exact form of either name would access each entry directly without going through the dab page. Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 00:10, 15 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Strong Support Only one with this spelling and Oppose a disambiguation and possibly delete it per WP:ONEOTHER. Literally a different spelling. There could easily just be a hatnote saying: Not to be confused with Mack V. Wright or vice versa for the other page (Mack Wright also works per MOS:NOPIPE). I agree with the WP:ONEOTHER rationale of If there are only two topics to which a given title might refer, and one is the primary topic, then a disambiguation page is not needed—it is sufficient to use a hatnote on the primary topic article, pointing to the other article. (This means that readers looking for the second topic are spared the extra navigational step of going through the disambiguation page.) Servite et contribuere (talk) 23:34, 19 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
