Suddenly there's a chief?

This article for a long time indicated this family was extinct, or at least there wasn't a chief and hadn't been for generations... how all of a sudden is one listed as current? How did he appear from nowhere, and what are his credentials? What's his genealogy, and by whom was it recognised? This is an excellent question, which I have also been pondering. The user 'irishhistoryguy' has said things about 'the current prince', but I don't believe such a person really exists. GenevieveDEon (talk) 00:09, 12 April 2026 (UTC)

There seems to be a website apparently run by the 'chief', where there are several mentions of other 'chiefs' approving of him, but they too seem a little doubtful in nature, having looked up a few of the names. He's an American military officer it seems, and an academic, which given irishhistoryguy saying HE'S been 'in academia for years' or something to that effect seems coincidental. Reliable sources that actually say the specific thing being claimed, no less, rather than stitched together into a novel synthesis. GenevieveDEon (talk) 07:01, 13 April 2026 (UTC)

Indeed. I'm still learning about what it takes to claim such titles. Mostly when reviewing newly created articles (for some reason seemingly always by American and English contributors) who use their own newly-created websites and newly-created Wikipedia profiles to claim themselves "Baron of Tirawley" or "Baron of Irrus" or (in this case) Prince of Carbery.

While I have much to learn about what *is* required for such claims (whether to a defunct feudal baronial title or "Chief of the Name" or whatever), I don't think that a flat cap, Aran jumper, Wix account and Irish surname are sufficient. Even if paired with an apparent inability to contact anyone in Ireland with the same surname :) And the magairlí to use their own Wix site as a source here. Or anywhere else that forms part of the real world.

That said, as with my Barrett "fan", I'd love to be there when someone calls to a McCarthy farm/pub in West Cork - and assert airs, authority, or "lordship" (or even simply "notions") over the occupants and their land. Just to see how much use the chunky knit jumper might be IRL :p .... Guliolopez (talk) 22:04, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
