The use of "sic" in "In 2004 Lenzing was producing 40,000 tons [sic, probably metric tonnes]"

I am confused about the "sic" in this sentence. Sic is generally used with direct quotes, but this sentence is not directly quoting anything, so what is it for? Is it trying to say while the source puts production capacity in tons (long or short tons), that figure should be in metric tons instead? If so, how do we know?
