"it was the only reason behind the name"

Where does this quote in the 2nd paragraph of the article come from? The citation linking to a Business Insider piece does not actually have it anywhere.

It is clear based on several articles that the founder stated, "It's funny to watch them try and say it," referring to the Japanese and the name Lululemon, but I am not seeing the follow-up "it was the only reason behind the name" anywhere. Is this simply made up?

The citations for the quote about him saying "it was funny to watch them say it" don't actually link to anything that confirms that from valid sources. Somebody can override my deletion if they put in a source that the Wiki community actually would recognize. Even then, it seems speculative and potentially slanderous so at the very most, it could be included as a controversy with neutral wording that also recognizes that the founder denies ever saying those things.

Based on the the topic above "boycott lululemon", I'd guess there are some people looking to intentionally bad mouth the company. Ynwamerchant22 (talk) 00:31, 30 December 2025 (UTC)

I reverted that part of your change, while leaving your other changes untouched. Both financialpost.com and businessinsider.com are reliable sources that meet WP:RS and both cite the claim made in the article. Note that both sources we use do in turn cite "National Post Business Magazine", i.e. both of them are citing a single source. But I don't see why we'd need more than that here, particularly given how reliable a source the Financial Post is. --Yamla (talk) 11:37, 30 December 2025 (UTC)

I don't think you can undeniably say BI and Financial Post are always reliable sources. BI is a "yellow" in Wiki's commonly used sources page (meaning it's questionable but not disallowed) and financial post isn't on the list (doesn't necessarily mean it's not credible though). I see a lot of other references to the National Post Business Magazine but I can't find the actual article anywhere.

Also I'm seeing different versions of the quote. It looks like people are piecing together to sound even more intentionally offensive. For example, this is from BI:

It was thought that a Japanese marketing firm would not try to create a North American sounding brand with the letter "L" because the sound does not exist in Japanese phonetics. By including an "L" in the name it was thought the Japanese consumer would find the name innately North American and authentic.

In essence, the name “lululemon” has no roots and means nothing other than it has 3 "L's" in it.  Nothing more and nothing less.

My problem is less with having a balanced reference to this on the page, and more that it is written as "fact" in the history section of this page. At most, it feels like there could be a high-level balanced reference to potential controversial beginnings of the name in the History section and then it can be fleshed out more in the controversies section, adding that Wilson has since denied saying those things. • Support per WP:COMMONNAME, WP:CONCISE and WP:NCCORP as per Ngrams. The main brand is just "lululemon", while the "athletica" is usually only in corporate contexts it appears, not commonly in sources which also use "lululemon" for the company. DankJae 23:25, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
