The future of the orchestra

The LCO was structured as a limited company (London Chamber Society Limited) that contracted musicians and put on concerts. It was this company that was dissolved in February 2025, taking with it the rights to the London Chamber Orchestra name. At that time there were more than 40 musicians who were owed money for their work for LCS Ltd, and the Musicians Union was supporting a legal claim against the orchestra. That legal action ended in February, when the organisation that owed the money (ie the orchestra) ceased to exist.

There also exists a charity, the London Chamber Orchestra Trust, that is nominally independent although one of the trustees has previously been described as 'owner' of the orchestra and a director of LCS Ltd. The LCOT appears to have raised money from private individuals and then made grants to LCS Ltd which to all intents and purposes was the orchestra. The article in The Londoner would seem to support the general impression that the LCOT and its trustees had no formal say in the activites carried out by the orchestra and LCS Ltd. The Trust appears to still be operating in some form, although its unclear how, and its newly appointed chair recently made some promotional edits to this page which I have undone.

I would suggest that an orchestra lives on as one of two things, either a continuous legal entity or a dedicated and continuing group of musicians (we've seen UK orchestras come back from the brink in both these ways over the years). Neither of those seem to be the case here, given that the legal entity that paid players and sold tickets collapsed owing money to the musicians that made up the orchestra. Therefore I would suggest that the LCO is no more.

If a new group emerges and decides to use the LCO name then the article should of course be updated to reflect that. Likewise if the LCOT decides to promote concerts under the LCO name itself or is somehow involved in setting up a replacement for LCS Ltd then the page should be updated. The LCOT and its chair should not use this article as a means to promote itself or declare its future intentions, and any edits to that effect should reach a consensus here first.
