Lonchodectes sagittirostris

[edit]

Sweetman et. al. (2011) note that "Lonchodectes" sagittirostris differs from other species of Lonchodectes in the form of the saw-like line on the lower jaw and suggest that it may represent a new genus and not even an azhdarchoid at all. To be on the safe side, the holotype of L. sagittirostris is tens of millions of years older than the type species of Lonchodectes, as acknowledged by Sweetman et. al., and it's unlikely that Lonchodectes survived for tens of millions of years.

Update to taxonomy

[edit]

A new paper by Rodrigues and Kellner (2013) declares Lonchodectes and its type species a nomen dubium and erects the new genus Lonchodraco for L. giganteus, with the referred species L. machaerorhynchus and L. microdon. "Pterodactylus" sagittirostris is relegated to nomen dubium status, while "Ornithocheirus" platysomus and "Pterodactylus" daviesii are considered possible new genera of pterodactyloids.

New articles have been created. Doesn't change much for this one, though. FunkMonk (talk) 00:58, 14 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
