Spelling

[edit]

WP has had

Lois Nielson a silent movie actress who became Stan Laurel's first wife

since 15:47, 4 September 2005, while IMDb has

Lois Neilson
Date of birth (location) 7 September 1895 Tulare, California, USA
Date of death 9 July 1990 Los Angeles, California, USA.
Sometimes Credited As: Lois Nelson

and shows them with roles together in Do You Love Your Wife? at IMDb

For the IE spelling,
Google gives "65 of about 164 " for

"Lois Nielson" -wikipedia

and 31 of about 55

"Lois Nielson" -wikipedia actress OR Laurel

For the EI spelling,
" 91 of about 290" for

"Lois Neilson" -wikipedia

and 44 of about 92

"Lois Neilson" -wikipedia actress OR Laurel

Which is to say that even tho IE is the more common spelling (for people named Lois), EI wins out when the facts of her history are used to restrict the search.

In the 1900 and 1910 US Census the family name is recorded as Nelson. However, as her father was Danish the family name was almost certainly Nielsen - with Nelson being the anglicised form. Neilson is just plain wrong as that is the Gaelic spelling.
IMDb lists 6 films using Nelson and only 4 using Neilson, so I would be tempted to rename this article as Lois Nelson.

Lois Laurel (daughter)

[edit]

Her birth year is given here as 1927, but most sources say 1928. Can anyone confirm which is correct? Alfietucker (talk) 19:58, 19 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
